Defining a New Sense of Family
ROSELAND, FL, JUNE 2010 -- By the River (BTR) is giving seniors the best possible chance to age in place at its new, eco-friendly independent residential community for low-income seniors. Approximately 150 people from Vero Beach and Sebastian, community leaders, and those interested in helping seniors attended a Wine & Cheese Party on Tuesday, June l5th to celebrate the community. Many were touched by what By the River offers to seniors and its beautiful surroundings. The festivities were introduced by BTR President Durga Das Hutner, CFO Patti Rooney, and Director of Charitable Gifts Joe Coakley. Eva Chapman and Mary Beth Verde presented a $l,000 donation from RBC Bank, part of whose mission is to help build better communities.
"Many of our area seniors are on limited resources. By the River is giving these low-income elders, some of our most vulnerable citizens, the opportunity to lead vibrant, active lives," said Mr. Hutner." With a little support from staff and volunteers, they can lead wonderful, joyful lives in the company of others."
The community features four buildings with 10 private units and baths and shared common areas such as kitchens, a library, computer lab and non-denominational chapel. It is built on five acres of land designed to preserve the native foliage and is adjacent to the St. Sebastian River. Units are designated for those living at 30-50% the median income level for the county (or earning less than $20,900 annually for calendar year 2010). Rents are based on a sliding scale. It is open to people nationwide, specifically the frail elderly who are lacking in two areas of daily living.
BTR has formed a community partnership to provide care, services and activities to its residents, including Senior Resource Association, the VNA and other home health providers. A full spectrum of programs designed to keep seniors socially engaged include art and music classes, health lectures, fitness plans, intergenerational activities, volunteer opportunities, and day trips.
The first of its kind in Indian River County, BTR has been recognized as a demonstration project by the State who hopes to model other such communities as sustainable solutions for aging. It is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization committed to providing compassionate care to the aging population, those living in poverty and to their caregivers.

Charter High Students to Perform at By the River (Public Is Invited to Attend)
On March 21, 2010, Indian River Charter High School's Performing Arts Department is taking their production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat on the road. The performance officially opens April 1st and runs through April 3rd at The Theater Guild in Vero Beach but the cast of Joseph is taking two of the more popular numbers, Any Dream Will Do and Song of the King, to the residents and guests of By The River. The public is invited to attend the performance at 2:00 p.m. at By the River, located at 11070 Ganga Way off Roseland Road in Sebastian. Guests may also take a tour of this new affordable, independent residential community for 41 low-income, frail seniors ages 62 and over.
"When I was acting full time, I would often perform at senior living homes because, as a performer, you cannot find a more receptive audience," said Michael Naffziger, Director of Theatre for IRCH. "This ‘preview performance’ will allow the students to test out their ‘stage legs,’ start a buzz about the show, and most importantly, provide fun and engaging entertainment for the residents of By The River."
By the River is giving seniors the chance to age in place with joy, dignity and purpose. It offers a full spectrum of programs designed to keep seniors active and engaged in life, including intergenerational activities, volunteer opportunities, art and music classes, health lectures, fitness plans, yoga and day trips. Area seniors are welcomed to attend many of the programs offered free of charge.
